Graduate Certificate in Bioethics

Overview

The University of Dallas, in partnership with the National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC), now offers a Graduate Certificate in Bioethics. Rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition, this program equips students with the philosophical and theological foundations necessary to engage today’s most pressing bioethical challenges.

Students complete 10 credits of graduate coursework, including specialized seminars taught by NCBC ethicists and UD faculty. The program is designed both for undergraduates seeking professional preparation in medicine, research, or bioethics, as well as for physicians, clinicians, and professionals seeking advanced training for service in healthcare or hospital ethics committees.

Curriculum

The Graduate Certificate requires 10 credits of coursework:

  • Graduate Seminar (0 credits): A two-day seminar presented by NCBC at UD’s campus.
  • Graduate Course in Bioethics (3 credits): Choose one semester-long graduate course taught by UD faculty:
    • PHI 4334 / 5334 Bioethics
    • THE 4345 / 5345 Bioethical Issues
  • Intensive Course (4 credits): A two-week graduate course taught by an NCBC Ethicist at UD’s campus.
  • Elective Course (3 credits): One additional graduate-level elective from the following:
    • PHI 4333 Philosophy of Science
    • PHI 4336 Ethics
    • PHI 4339 Philosophy of Technology
    • PHI 7330 Philosophical Anthropology
    • POL 3330 Public Law and Administration
    • POL 3342 Political Philosophy and the Family
    • POL 6324 Public Policy
    • PSY 3354 Health Psychology
    • THE 3341 Fundamental Moral Theology
    • THE 4333 Christian Anthropology
    • THE 4342 Christian Marriage
    • THE 4343 Social Teaching
    • THE 4346 Faith and Science

Total: 10 credits

Admissions

Applicants may enroll as degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking students. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate programs may begin the certificate, and practicing professionals are also welcome to apply.
